Abstract

5-Nitrofurfural semicarbazone or thiosemicarbazone is prepared by reacting 5-nitrofurfural diacetate with semicarbazide or thiosemicarbazide which may be used as a salt, e.g. the hydrochloride. A solvent such as ethyl alcohol may be present, and pyridine, especially when salts are used. In examples: (1) a solution of semicarbazide hydrochloride in water, and then pyridine, are added to 5-nitrofurfural diacetate in alcohol at 60 DEG C. After heating at 60 DEG C. for 2 hours, and cooling, the solid is filtered off and crystallized from b -ethoxyethanol; (2) thiosemicarbazide is added to the diacetate in ethyl alcohol, and boiling continued under reflux for 24 hours, followed by cooling and filtering.
