Abstract

In a bearing or a gear-box having contacting surfaces of steel or of steel and bronze the lubricant applied is a fluid, aqueous solution of sodium and/or potassium silicate. The solution may contain 15-60% by weight of sodium silicate having a molar ratio of SiO2 to Na2O of 1.6 : 1 to 1.4 : 1; 15-60% of potassium silicate having a molar ratio of SiO2 to K2O of 1.4 : 1 to 4 : 1; 10% by weight of a thickening agent; up to 2% by weight of a corrosion inhibitor; and 0.25 to 10% by weight of molybdenum disulphide, 0.25 to 12% by weight of graphite or 0.25 to 12% by weight of a mixture of molybdenum disulphide and graphite. Suitable thickening agents, include sodium alginate, gum arabic or another silicate such as calcium silicate, for example, and suitable corrosion inhibitors include sodium chromate, sodium nitrate and sodium benzoate for example. The solution has self-sealing properties.ALSO:In a bearing or a gear-box having contacting surfaces of steel or of steel and bronze the lubricant applied is a fluid, aqueous solution of sodium and/or potassium silicate. The solution may contain 15-60% by weight of sodium silicate having a molar ratio of SiO2 to Na2O of 1.6: 1 to 1.4: 1; 15-60% of potassium silicate having a molar ratio of SiO2 to K2O of 1.4: 1 to 4: 1; 10% by weight of a thickening agent; up to 2% by weight of a corrosion inhibitor; and 0.25 to 10% by weight of graphite or 0.25 to 12% by weight of a mixture of molbydenum disulphide and graphite. Suitable thickening agents include sodium alginate, gum arabic or another silicate such as calcium silicate for example and suitable corrosion inhibitors include sodium chromate, sodium nitrate and sodium benzoate for example.
