Mineral oils, purifying; recovering waste lubricants. - The flash point and viscosity of lubricating oils, especially spent oils, are raised, and the low boiling constituents are removed, by treating the oil in vacuo and at an elevated temperature with a neutral gas such as nitrogen or a vapour such as that of alcohol or benzine, or any mixtures of these, which gas, vapour, or mixture contains a liquid of low boiling point such as an alcohol, benzene, benzine, or water dispersed therein in a finely divided state, such mixtures being inert to the oil treated. In examples (1) a used steam cylinder oil is heated to 310‹ C. and treated with wet steam in vacuo, (2) Panuco mineral oil is heated to 200‹ C. and treated with a slow current of carbon dioxide loaded with benzene vapour.
