Abstract
To remove sulphur as completely as possible from hydrocarbon oils or petroleum fractions without loss of the constituents valuable in motor fuels, the oil, e.g. a pressure distillate, is treated first at atmospheric temperature with a dilute acid, such as sulphuric acid containing 31 per cent H2SO4, and then at a substantially lower temperature such as 15 DEG -20 DEG F. with a concentrated acid, such as sulphuric acid containing 97,4 per cent H2SO4. The oil may be further treated with the concentrated acid at a higher temperature such as atmospheric temperature. The refined oil is distilled with steam and fractionated.
