Abstract

<PICT:0362600/III/1> Lubricating oils are desulphurized and otherwise purified by undiluted liquid phenol at a temperature below that of complete miscibility. The use of 50-300 lb. of phenol to 100 lb. of oil at temperatures not higher than 250, 180, and 140 DEG F. in batch or countercurrent apparatus is specified. Phenol is separated from the extract and the treated oil by distillation. For example, 100-150 lb. of phenol and 100 lb. of oil from tanks 2, 1 are passed at 140 DEG F. or below through a countercurrent treater 3 to the phenol and oil store tanks 7, 6. Or the same proportions at the same temperature are passed through a series of agitators on the countercurrent principle, the mixture from any agitator being allowed to settle and the oil and phenol layers separated before passage to the next agitators. In the batch process the oil may be treated, separated, and retreated one or more times with fresh or previously used phenol.
