Abstract
In a process of separating liquid hydrocarbons into their more saturated and unsaturated or less saturated constituents by extraction in countercurrent with a selective solvent, a higher temperature is maintained at the solvent entry than at the entry for the hydrocarbon mixture. A temperature difference of 15--60 DEG p C. is specified. A treating tower or a series of mixers and settling chambers are used, with heating or cooling devices in the first and last stages, whereby a non-gradual temperature gradient is obtained. In an example, a lubricating oil is diluted slightly with a solvent consisting of benzene and liquefied sulphur dioxide and passed in countercurrent with this solvent mixture. The diluted oil is introduced at 27 DEG C. and the solvent at 52 DEG C. A good yield of lubricating oil having a high viscosity index is obtained. Light petroleum fractions may also be treated. Other solvents specified are, phenol, nitrobenzene, acetone, b b <1>-dichlorethyl ether, and mixtures of phenol with water or glycerin. Specifications 445,317 and 451,881 are referred to.
