Abstract
Mineral lubricating-oils are improved as regards the temperature-viscosity curve by treatment with a selective solvent consisting of methanol mixed with other solvents having a greater solvent power for aromatic and naphthenic hydrocarbons as described in Specification 439,621, but excluding sulphur dioxide. Lubricating oil is agitated with a mixture containing equal parts of methanol and phenol or nitrobenzene at 20 to 100 DEG C., and allowed to separate into layers. The upper layer is drawn off and freed from solvent by distillation leaving a lubricating oil of high viscosity index. The oil and solvent may be passed in countercurrent. The resulting oil may be freed from wax to improve the setting point or substances added for this purpose. Agents preventing resinification or ageing may be added together with dyestuffs, agents increasing the viscosity such as polymerized isobutylene, or substances producing fluorescence. Specification 369,737 also is referred to.
