Abstract
Hydrocarbons of motor fuel boiling range are freed from all sulphur compounds by separating into high and low boiling fractions, treating the high boiling fraction with diluted sulphuric acid, and the low boiling fraction with concentrated sulphuric acid, and treating the recombined fractions with hot caustic alkali under pressure. Alternatively, the hydrocarbons may first be submitted to the alkali treatment, then treated with diluted sulphuric acid, the low boiling fraction separated, and, after treatment with concentrated sulphuric, recombined with the remainder of the hydrocarbons. The temperature separating low from high boiling fractions is about 90 DEG C. Concentrated sulphuric acid is about 66 DEG B<\>ae, and diluted sulphuric acid is any concentration less than this. Cracked benzine, motor benzol or distillation benzine is separated into two fractions boiling up to 90 DEG C. and from 90 to 180 DEG C. The low boiling fraction is freed from thiophene by extraction with 66 DEG B<\>ae sulphuric acid, and the high boiling fraction is washed with 60 DEG B<\>ae sulphuric acid. The fractions are then combined and heated under pressure with caustic soda, whereby carbon disulphide is removed. The valuable olefines are retained in the fuel. Specification 414,644 is referred to.
