Abstract

In the refining of mineral lubricating-oils, the most easily removed and desirable hydrocarbon components (A) are restored to an oil which has been freed from both the easily removed components and the undesirable and less easily removed hydrocarbon components (B). The A components consist mainly of hydrocarbons poor in hydrogen such as unsaturated or aromatic hydrocarbons and have good lubricating properties. Examples: (1) The lubricating oil which may consist of a crude oil, a distillate or residue is first freed from the A components by treating with 10 per cent sulphuric acid at 25 DEG C. for about 15 mins., and then the B components are removed by more intense refining by treating with concentrated sulphuric acid at 60--80 DEG C., for an hour. The A components are then regenerated from the acid tar by treating with caustic soda and if desired distilling the resulting oil in vacuo. The refined oil is then mixed with about 4 per cent of the distillate. (2) A lubricating oil is diluted with benzine and extracted with liquid sulphur dioxide at 10 DEG C. The extract is freed from SO2 and benzine and a small amount is added to the oil which has been further treated with liquid SO2 at 10 DEG C., without a diluent and then with concentrated sulphuric acid and finally neutralized with lime and decolorizing earth. The A components may also be removed by selective solvents such as propionitrile or acetonitrile or by activated decolorizing earth such as Terrana from which they are extracted by a mixture of benzol and ethyl alcohol. In a modified process the A and B components may be removed in one step and the A components then separated from the mixture. The first step may be effected by extraction with concentrated sulphuric acid, chlorsulphonic acid, nitrobenzene or dichlorethyl ether. The extract is then treated with SO2 and a diluent at low temperature, or with propio- or acetonitrile, to extract the A components. In the case of an acid extract the mixture is treated with caustic soda and a diluent such as benzine and the resulting oil treated with dilute sulphuric acid at 0 DEG C. The acid extract is again treated with caustic soda and the resulting A components thereby liberated. U.S.A. Specifications 1,768,910, 1,868,333, 1,868,473, and 1,869,608 are referred to.
