Abstract

Phenols are removed or recovered from aqueous liquors containing them by subjecting said liquors to extraction with hydrogenated oils, such liquors being treated as do not form a homogeneous solution in the hydrogenated oils, and separating the two layers formed. The phenols may be recovered from the solution in the oils in known manner, e.g. by washing out with alkali lye or by distillation, after which the hydrogenated oil may be used again. Suitable hydrogenated oils are those obtainable by hydrogenation of tar oils, e.g. those produced by carbonization of bituminous coals, or of acid oils, such as are obtained in the dry distillation of the resins formed in the refining of crude benzol by means of sulphuric acid. The process is applicable to the treatment of waste liquors containing phenols of any origin, e.g. from coke plants, coal tar distillation plants or brown coal low temperature distillation plants, and particularly to the treatment of aqueous waste liquors obtained in the destructive hydrogenation of coal and like distillable carbonaceous materials. In an example, waste water from the destructive hydrogenation of coal is stirred with an equal quantity of hydrogenated wash oil boiling at 220--350 DEG C., and the upper layer is extracted with aqueous sodium hydroxide to obtain sodium phenolate.
