Abstract
Acid sludges obtained in the refining of liquid hydrocarbons such as benzine or benzol are diluted with water and then centrifuged or filtered, the operations being preferably conducted while cooling to 15-30 DEG C. An amount of water equal to or up to double the amount of sludge may be employed. The separation may be promoted by the addition of substances presenting a large surface, such as lignite coke, active carbon, Bentonite, or bleaching earth in quantities of e.g. 3 per cent. The resulting acid may be used without further purification for many industrial purposes.
