Abstract

The precipitation of suspended matter from waste liquids containing sludge, e.g. coal mud, blast furnace dust or fire ore, which contain or have been treated with lime or other precipitants, or coagulants, is promoted by the addition of small quantities of an emulsion of resinous hydrocarbons. The hydrocarbons used may be those formed on treating aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons with sulphuric acid or other agents having a polymerizing and condensing action and particularly waste products of inferior quality obtained in working up hydrocarbons obtained from mineral coal, brown coal, wood or petroleum. Oil may be added to form the emulsion.
