Abstract

1,257,827. Purifying hydrocarbon oils. ATLANTIC RICHFIELD CO. 14 April, 1969, No. 19054/69. Heading C5E. A process of treating petroleum hydrocarbons which have been wasted with caustic alkali and which contain water, alkali and alkali metal salts of the acids present in the petroleum hydrocarbons comprises contacting said petroleum hydrocarbons with sufficient carbonic acid to acidify said alkali metal salts and to reduce the formation of an emulsion between said hydrocarbons and the retained portion of said caustic alkali, and separating the acidified alkali metal salts from said hydrocarbons. The carbonic acid may be added by introducing CO 2 which combines with the residual water in the oil, or a mixture of CO 2 and water may be added. The process may be applied to diesel oil and stove oil.
