Abstract

In the removal of oxides of sulphur from combustion gases by means of aqueous washing media, deposition on the plant surfaces of calcium sulphate dihydrate is reduced or inhibited by maintaining in suspension in the washing media a large excess, say 5--10 per cent by weight, of solid calcium sulphate dihydrate. It is stated that calcium sulphite or carbonate or flue dust may also have some effect. The washing liquid may be water, but advantageously an aqueous suspension of calcium hydroxide or preferably of calcium carbonate is used. When the washing liquor is used cyclically, an amount of suspended solids is removed therefrom by settling corresponding to "the make" and calcium carbonate added to replace that removed by combination with the gases prior to recirculation of the liquor. Before solids are removed, the washing medium is preferably oxidized to convert calcium sulphite to calcium sulphate, and the settling may be so controlled that whereas calcium sulphate is removed, calcium carbonate remains in suspension. When the washing liquor does not contain lime or calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate in the settled sludge may be recovered for recirculation by elutriation or differential sedimentation. The process may be combined with the periodic flushing of the plant surfaces described and claimed in Specification 416,671, and the apparatus therein described may be used both for the process of the invention, and the combined processes.
