Abstract

To separate putrescible suspended matter from sewage, the matter is coagulated by adding a compound of a trivalent metal, such as ferric sulphate, and agitating with air during a detention period of several minutes, and flocculated by addition of lime or other alkali and further agitation with air. The amount of coagulating agent used is such that the sewage at the completion of the coagulating treatment has a pH value not less than 5. The flocculated matter is removed by causing the liquid to pass upward through accumulated sludge. The separated sludge is thickened, dehydrated by means of a suction filter and then passed through rotary drying and incinerating apparatus. Gases from the incinerating apparatus pass in contact with the material in the drying apparatus. The ash resulting from incineration is treated with sulphuric acid to recover ferric sulphate for repeated use in the process. Effluent from which the flocculated matter has been separated may be subjected to a base-exchange treatment, as described in Specification 410,607. U.S.A. Specification 1,886,267 also is referred to.
