Abstract

Paraffin wax filtered out from lignite and other tars is refined by dissolving out the creosote by phenols of low B.P., sweating, and decolorizing. The extraction may be in steps, and it may be preceded or followed by distillation of the wax with slight cracking; benzine or like solvent of paraffin may be present during the extraction to moist separation into layers; and the solvent phenol may be diluted with water. Phenols specified are phenol, cresol, xylenol, and mixtures thereof. The sweated-out oil is advantageously used for cracking as it forms but little coke. In an example, a paraffin oil distillate of Rositz low-temperature tar is filtered at 20 DEG C., and 100 lb. of the crude wax extracted at 60--70 DEG C. with 3 separate 50 lb. of 90 per cent cresol, distilled with steam to remove residual solvent, sweated, and decolorized by semi-coke or low-temperature coke.
