Abstract

517,618. Phenol recovery. JOHNSON, G. W. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 27,1938, No. 22361. [Class 2 (iii)] Phenols are removed from oils and waste aqueous liquors by first extracting the oil at elevated temperature and pressure with a waste aqueous liquor containing phenols, separating the extract by cooling into water and water containing phenols and finally treating the latter with known, extraction or adsorption agents for phenols, e.g., tricresyl phosphate, benzene or active carbon. Thus, oils obtained from the distillation of coal' or tar, coking, low temperature carbonization, destructive hydrogenation or solvent extraction are mixed in the ratio of 1:¢ to 1:5 with the waste aqueous liquors to be freed from phenols and heated to 200-280‹ C. at 30-80 atmospheres ; the aqueous extract is first separated at the prevailing pressure and then cooled to give two layers of which one consists mainly of phenols and the other of water containing 10-15 grams of phenols per litre, from which the .phenols are extracted in known manner with organic solvents or adsorbents. The layer formation is assisted by the addition of readily boiling hydrocarbons before or after the cooling. A part of the water separating from the extract may be freed from phenols as described, and the remainder returned in circulation to the extraction vessel. Examples are given.
