Abstract

513,541. Purifying phenols. DEUTSCHE ERDOL-AKT.-GES. April 12, 1938, No. 11197. Convention date, April 27, 1937. [Class 2 (iii)] In the process of obtaining pure phenols from tar oils by extracting with alkali lye and treating the alkali phenolates with an inert adsorbent the tar oil or alkali phenolate is enriched with low-boiling phenols boiling below 220‹C. The resulting mixture is extracted with alkaline lye, and the phenolate layer treated with adsorbents, whereupon the phenols are isolated by acidification, or if dilute alkali lye is used whereby free phenols are formed by hydrolysis, by extraction with solvents, such as ether or benzol. The initial enrichment with lowboiling phenols may be effected by adding such phenols as oil or as alkali phenolate, to a tar oil or by removing components of higher boiling point. For example, lignite tar fraction boiling at 170-300‹C. is distilled to remove half the volume. The distillate boiling at 170- 240‹C. containing 20 per cent. of phenols is treated with 10 per cent. alkali lye. After standing and removing any precipitate the phenolate layer is heated at 80-90‹ with steam, and is treated with lignite coke, active carbon, Fuller's earth, diatomaceous earth, aluminium hydroxide, or silica. The refined alkali phenolate is then treated with carbon dioxide, sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, and the liberated phenols redistilled if desired after pre-treating with a small amount of formaldehyde.
