Abstract

Aqueous alkaline solutions of phenols, phenol homologues and other hydroxy aromatic compounds occurring in tar oils and particularly in tar oils which are obtained from vertical retorts and from low-temperature processes of coal distillations and also tars from mineral oils such as cracked mineral oils are subjected to distillation under a pressure substantially less than atmospheric pressure to remove volatile impurities. The phenols are then liberated by known processes such as the addition of sulphuric acid or carbon dioxide, separated from the aqueous liquid and fractionated at appropriate temperatures and pressures. The distillation may be accompanied by oxidation or reduction which may be effected by the addition of oxydizing or reducing agents to the aqueous alkaline solution or oxidation or reduction may be effected before or after the distillation in which case they may also be carried out by electrolytic means. The tar oils may be subjected to heat treatment prior to extracting the phenols with caustic soda. In the example a sodium cresylate solution obtained by washing tar oil with aqueous caustic alkali is allowed to settle and then boiled vigorously in a vacuum pan; the refined sodium cresylate can be decomposed by known processes and distilled.
