Abstract

Solid and fusible extracts are obtained from mineral coals, brown coals, and peat by extracting them under pressure with organic solvents consisting of hydrogenated compounds, e.g. tetrahydronaphthalene, more particularly in admixture with phenols, phenol-containing oils, and tar fractions, either at temperatures which always lie close to the prevailing decomposition temperature of the material undergoing extraction, being progressively increased, e.g. stepwise as described in Specification 293,808, [Class 91], as the extraction proceeds, or at temperatures which initially are rapidly raised up to, or close to, the decomposition temperature of the final residual material, and separating the solid and fusible extract from the resulting solution by removal of the solvent, the process, for the purpose of maintaining the solventhydrogenated throughout, being carried out in the presence of hydrogen, or of gases containing admixed hydrogen, under pressure, with or without the employment of hydrogenating catalysts such as molybdenum compounds.
