Abstract
286,171. Fessel, G., and Technische Chemilkalien Co. Ges. Sept. 21, 1927. Indiarubber, preserving; plastic compositions containing indiarubber and oils.-A softening and antiageing ingredient for use in the manufacture of rubber goods is obtained by extracting the phenolic constituents and aromatic bases contained in tar produced by the distillation of coal, lignite, shale or peat or in the distillates from such tars, any undesirable light oils being subsequently removed. The oils obtained are preferably heated to a temperature of 135-154‹ C., allowed to cool, and then added to rubber mixings or scrap rubber in the proportion of 5-10 per cent. Suitable solvents for extracting the tar or tar distillates are methylated spirits, methyl or ethyl alcohol, acetone or ethyl acetate or mixtures thereof, preferably diluted with water, the extract being subsequently distilled to remove the solvent, the water and lighter oils. Soda lye may also be used as the solvent, the extract being subsequently acidified and the oils obtained subjected to distillation to remove the more volatile constituents. Benzol may also be employed as the solvent in some cases. Specifications 142,083 and 269,745 are referred to.
