Abstract
Asphalt and wax are removed from petroleum or petroleum products by adding an aliphatic ether or ester whereby asphalt is precipitated and is removed, and then adding a diluent which increases the solvent power of the ether or ester for the oil and cooling to precipitate the wax. Ethers and esters specified are, methyl or ethyl formate, acetate or propionate, propyl formate, amyl acetate; diethyl, methyl ethyl, or isoamyl ether or mixtures thereof. Suitable diluents are aromatic or halogenated hydrocarbons such as Edeleanu extract, toluene, benzene, light tar oil fractions; chloroform, or dichlorethylene. In an example, crude oil or an oil residue is mixed with ethyl acetate at room temperature, and the precipitated asphalt is separated. The supernatant oil solution is mixed with a sulphur dioxide extract of kerosene, and the mixture is cooled to -20 DEG C. The precipitated wax is removed by filtration.
