Abstract
Lubricating-oils are improved as regards turbidity, setting point and colour, by an addition, e.g. 0,05--3 per cent of an oil-soluble vacuum residue, solid at ordinary temperatures, derived from de-asphalted hydrocarbon products containing cyclic constituents, e.g. tar, asphalt-basic or mixed basic mineral oils, especially from hydrogenation products or from destructive hydrogenation of coals or coal tars. The initial material is treated with flocculents, e.g. benzine, gas oil or liquefied normally gaseous hydrocarbons to precipitate asphalts, and, after separation, the oil is subjected to vacuum distillation, preferably up to 300--350 DEG C. and under a pressure of 78 mm. mercury. In an example, a destructive hydrogenation product boiling above 350 DEG C. is treated with benzene and centrifuged to separate solid constituents, then with a light benzine containing petroleum ether, to separate asphalt, after which the larger portion of the precipitant is distilled off and the mixture is then refined with sulphuric acid followed by caustic soda; the washed and dried oil is distilled up to 350 DEG C. under a pressure of 8 mm. mercury yielding a red-brown resin as residue.
