Abstract

505,953. Motor fuels; destructive hydrogenation of tars and oils. UHDE, F., and PFIRRMANN, T. W. Aug. 29, 1938, No. 25287. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1937. [Classes 32 and 91] Gasoline and Diesel fuels are made from tars such as brown coal, low or high temperature, or producer tar, by treating the tar with a middle oil obtained in the reduction of carbon monoxide with hydrogen and separating the extract from the heavy oil residue, the extract being then hydrogenated in the gas phase and the oil residue hydrogenated in the liquid phase to form fuels. In an example, brown coal tar is mixed with an equal weight of the middle oil, boiling at 180 to 220‹ C., at normal or at elevated temperature, to form an extract of non-aromatic hydrocarbons and low boiling phenols, and an oil residue of asphaltic and aromatic hydrocarbons, and high molecular phenols. The two phases are separated by sedimentation or centrifuging. The extract layer, from which some of the middle oil may be removed, is hydrogenated in the gaseous phase at 420 to 440‹ C. with sulphur-immune catalysts, and a gasoline fraction boiling up to 200‹ C. is taken off leaving a readily ignitable Diesel oil. The oil residue is hydrogenated in the liquid phase under pressure and at 450 to 500‹ C. with finely divided tin or molybdenum as catalyst, to yield a gasoline, a middle oil and also a heavy oil fraction which is recycled. The middle oil may be further hydrogenated to form gasoline, or it may be blended with the Diesel fuel obtained from the extract.
