Abstract

A virgin mercaptan-containing hydrocarbon oil, which may contain up to about 25 per cent by volume of cracked components, is refined by contact with a catalyst comprising cobalt molybdate or alumina, molybdenum oxide on alumina or a mixture of tungsten sulphide and nickel sulphide, under conditions, including a temperature in the range 400-700 DEG F. and a pressure below 500 lbs./sq. in. gauge such as to result in partial sweetening of the oil. The contacting is carried out in the absence of extraneously-added or recycled hydrogen and in the absence of extraneously-added hydrogen donor material. The partially sweetened oil, after removal of hydrogen sulphide, for example by washing with caustic alkali solution, may be further sweetened by washing with caustic alkali solution in the presence of added air. Virgin naphtha, blended if desired with up to about 25 per cent by volume of cracked naphtha, may be contacted with the catalyst under the specified conditions and the partially sweetened naphtha washed with caustic soda solution. The naphtha may then be further sweetened, by washing with caustic soda solution in the presence of added air and in the presence of an oxidation inhibitor such as phenylene diamine, to produce a doctor-sweet motor fuel. Apparatus is also described in which crude petroleum is distilled to yield various fractions including a heating oil fraction and a gas oil fraction. The heating oil fraction is contacted with the catalyst under the specified conditions to yield a partially sweetened heating oil, which is washed with caustic alkali solution to remove hydrogen sulphide and then further sweetened by washing with caustic alkali solution in the presence of added air. The gas oil fraction from the crude petroleum is cracked to yield various products including a cracked heating oil fraction. This is washed with caustic alkal solution and then blended with the sweetened heating oil mentioned above.
