Abstract

In the desulphurization of two petroleum fractions, namely (1) a diesel oil boiling in the range 350-700 DEG F. and (2) a middle distillate boiling in the range 225-550 DEG F. (e.g. kerosene, jet fuel or hydrocarbon solvent), each fraction is catalytically hydrofined separately, the feedstream to each hydrofining operation being preheated by indirect heat exchange with the effluent from the other hydrofining operation. Fraction (2) is hydrofined at 400-600 DEG F. and 75-400 p.s.i.g. pressure in the presence of hydrogen-containing gas separated from the effluent from the hydrofining of fraction (1), the initial heat exchange being sufficient to bring fraction (2) to the hydrofining temperature. Fraction (1) comes directly from a pipe still and, after the initial heat exchange, is heated further to bring it to the hydrofining temperature. The effluent from the hydrofining of fraction (1) passes to a separator where hydrogen-containing gas is removed, and then to a stripper vessel where hydrogen sulphide and light naphtha are removed, the final hydrofined diesel oil product being substantially free from sulphur. The effluent from the hydrofining of fraction (2) may also pass to a stripper vessel where light naphtha, hydrogen and hydrogen sulphide are removed, the final hydrofined middle distillate being likewise substantially free from sulphur. Light naphtha from the stripper vessel employed in connection with fraction (2) may pass to the stripping vessel employed in connection with fraction (1). The catalyst employed in each hydrofining operation may comprise cobalt molybdate on alumina. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
