Abstract

Tetrahydronaphthalene, dekahydronaphthalene, hexahydrophenol or other hydrogenated products of naphthalene or phenol, singly or mixed, are used to break down coal, anthracite, peat, lignite, bituminous slates, and similar substances. In an example, Bohemian lignite is treated with vapours of tetrahydronaphthalene for 24 hours, the extract distilled in vacuo with superheated steam to remove the solvent, and the residue separated into montan wax, hydrocarbon oils containing phenols, and saponifiable substances either by distilling until coke remains, or by successive treatment with different solvents, e.g. benzine, benzole and acetone. In other examples, the solvent and carbonaceous material are boiled under pressures of 8-20 atmospheres at 300-440 DEG C., and the whole of the extract is cracked.
