Abstract

Phenols are separated from materials containing phenols and neutral oils, e.g. oils and tars, by solvent extraction to give a crude product which is distilled to remove asphaltic impurities and the remaining impurities are separated by extraction, in the presence of water, with substances capable of dissolving neutral oils. Preferably the initial material such as a tar oil is extracted with aqueous alcohol, e.g. aqueous methanol suitably in the presence of low boiling aliphatic hydrocarbons such as benzine which remove the neutral oils. The aqueous alcoholic extract is subjected to a rectifying distillation preferably using a column of over 50 theoretical plates and with an increase reflux ratio, the resulting phenol fraction is saturated with water and treated with a low boiling saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon such as benzine to remove the neutral oils leaving water-saturated phenols, which are separated by distillation. In the case of a phenol fraction containing a high content of higher boiling phenols, the final extraction step is suitably carried out at a slightly elevated temperature and in the presence of a water dissolving substance such as carbolic acid or methanol to increase the miscibility of the phenols with water. An example is given.
