Abstract
310,623. Davis, W. G., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. March 21, 1928. Aliphatic alcohols.-The separation of higher aliphatic alcohols such as isobutanol from the crude product of the catalytic hydrogenation of oxides of carbon is effected by distilling the crude product to remove the bulk of the methanol and treating the residue with a salting-out solution. According to the example, a crude product containing 25 per cent of higher alcohols, 60 per cent of methanol, and 15 per cent of water and other substances, is distilled until the residue contains 75 per cent of higher alcohols, 15 per cent of methanol, and 10 per cent of water. The residue is extracted with saturated brine, when a layer containing 92 per cent of higher alcohols is obtained from which the alcohols are separated by distillation, the first runnings being returned to the brine extractor. The brine is distilled to recover the methanol. The distillation of the crude product may be effected in a continuous still, methanol being taken off at the top of the column and the 75 per cent higher alcohol liquor at an intermediate point. The extraction with brine may also be effected continuously by passing the higher alcohol liquor through a tower against a counter-current of brine.
