Abstract

275,313. Cross, R. May 3, 1926. Drawings to Specification. Phenols.-Mixtures of phenols, cresols &c. useful as disinfectants are obtained by extracting with caustic soda, distillates obtained in the cracking of coal tar or its distillates or of shale oil, asphaltic base crude oils, cracked oils &c. If the oils to be cracked do not contain oxygen compounds, the cracking is carried out in presence of substances containing the hy droxyl group such as glycols, glycerine or other alcohols. The phenols are recovered from the extract by treatment with hydrochloric or sulphuric acid.
