Abstract

288,931. Thole, F. B., Birch, S. F., and Norris, W. S. G. P. Oct. 13, 1926. Mineral oils, purifying.-In the refining of petroleum, kerosene, or benzine by alkaline solution of alkali or alkaline earth hypochlorite, the concentration of the free alkali is not substantially less than 1.5 per cent whereby the evil-smelling sulphur compounds are converted into others less offensive adapted to be removed with the remaining sulphur compounds by subsequent refining treatment. The hypochlorite treatment may be combined in various ways with redistillation, and treatment with sulphuric acid,.caustic alkali, and water. In an example cracked Pessian distillate is treated with 0.5 per cent by volume of concentrated sulphuric acid, washed with water, treated with sodium hypochlorite solution containing 1.6 per cent of caustic soda and 3.94 per cent of available chlorine, the proportion used being such as to give 1 gram of chlorine per litre of oil, washed, distilled up to 185‹ C., washed with soda, and water washed.
