Abstract
Hydrocarbon oils having a reduced content of gum-forming components and of sulphur compounds are prepared by heating the oil at 75-125 DEG C. in the presence of oxygen, further heating the oil at at least 140 DEG C. without any further supply of oxygen, and separating the liquid polymers thus formed. The oils may be treated with free oxygen or air, or ozonised oxygen or air; they may be treated under pressure and under the influence of ultra-violet light. Part of the oil treated in the first stage may be recycled, or alternatively a small quantity of peroxide may be added to the oil in this stage. The oils may be separated from the liquid polymers by distillation or by contacting with an adsorbent such as clay, bauxite, silica gel or Fuller's earth. Preferably before separation of the polymers, the oils may be freed from aldehydes and ketones by washing with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium bisulphite and then treated with an alkali metal hydroxide solution to remove acid components. Oils treated may be gasolines obtained by reforming or thermal or catalytic cracking of hydrocarbons or hydrocarbon mixtures, shale oils or lignite tar oils; mixtures of a cracked and straight-run distillate may also be used. The examples refer to treatment of a cracked gasolines obtained by thermally cracking solid paraffin wax, and by catalytic cracking of gas oil. Para-phenylene diamine may be added to the treated oil. In a modification, a hydrocarbon oil containing peroxides obtained by heating in the presence of oxygen at 75-125 DEG C. may be mixed with another portion of the same oil or with a different oil at at least 140 DEG C. to remove the gum-forming components therefrom.
