Abstract
Acid tars from the refining of mineral oils are treated in the liquid phase at elevated temperature with an amount of a neutralizing agent which is equivalent to the free and combined sulphuric acid present, and the purified organic reaction product which is liberated is removed after allowing the mixture to separate into layers. In examples: (1) centrifuged acid tar from lubricating oil is heated with burnt magnesite and water, and after standing, the aqueous magnesium sulphate solution separated from the organic residue; (2) uncentrifuged acid tar from spindle oil is heated with caustic soda solution after a preliminary treatment with water to separate the acid tar from spindle oil; alkali sulphate solution is removed and the organic product washed with dilute sulphuric acid and water prior to being distilled in vacuo over copper oxide; (3) acid tar is heated under pressure with calcium oxide and water in the presence of iron sulphate. Acetone is added, the sulphate layer separated and the solvent removed from the solution of the organic product. Steam may be used to distil the product and copper sulphate may be used to assist the treatment of the acid tars.ALSO:Acid tars from the refining of mineral oil are treated in the liquid phase at elevated temperature with an amount of a neutralizing agent which is equivalent to the free and combined sulphuric acid present, and the liberated organic reaction product is removed after the mixture has separated into layers.
