Abstract
<PICT:0404571/III/1> Phenol and benzol are obtained by cracking tars, schist oils and coal distillates, purified by treatment with ozone and lime water, at 800 DEG C, and treating the cracked vapours, after removal of phenols by condensation, with a mixture of ozone and nitrogen monoxide. The purified oils are heated in a still 1 surrounded by a jacket of hot gases and the vapours pass through a vessel 3 where the majority of the phenols are condensed, to a vacuum jacketed aluminium sphere 4 in which the vapours comprising a mixture of benzols, mercaptans, and other sulphur compounds are treated with jets of ozone and nitrogen monoxide supplied under pressure by a pipe 5. The sulphur compounds are converted to p sulphates and the phenols reduced to benzol. The products are passed through a vessel 6 containing lime water to remove sulphates and through a vessel containing potassium hydroxide solution to remove residual phenols and the vapours are condensed in a condenser 10 to give a 60 per cent colourless benzol.ALSO:<PICT:0404571/IV/1> Phenol and benzol are obtained by cracking tars, schist oils and coal distillates, purified by treatment with ozone and lime water, at 800 C. and treating the cracked vapours, after removal of phenols by condensation, with a mixture of ozone and nitrogen mon-oxide.
