Abstract

In the process described in the parent Specification for the manufacture of soluble vulcanizable polymers of 2-chlor-butadiene-1.3 by emulsion polymerization in the presence of neutral alkali or ammonium salts which exert no oxidizing action under the conditions of working and have no emulsifying action, the yield is increased by working also in the presence of organic solvents which are insoluble in water but dissolve the chlor-butadiene and the polymers. Suitable solvents are chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons such as carbon tetrachloride, benzene, toluene, and carbon disulphide. These may be added before or during the reaction but before the emulsion separates. In examples, polymerization is effected in emulsion in sodium oleate with addition of ammonium sulphate. Carbon tetrachloride or xylene is added during the course of the reaction, or benzene prior to polymerization. The latex formed may be stabilized and the solvent distilled.
