Abstract
Artificial materials are prepared by polymerizing a mixture of vinyl chloride and unsymmetrical dichlorethylene containing from 20 to 80 per cent of the latter substance, the mixture being in the form of an aqueous emulsion. The polymerizate may be subjected to further chlorination, which may be accompanied or followed by de-polymerization, in the manner described in Specification 401,200. The products have a high solubility in organic solvents, e.g. in a mixture of butyl acetone, benzene, and acetone. In examples, a mixture of vinyl chloride and unsymmetrical dichlorethylene is added to an aqueous solution of soap, hydrogen peroxide and diammonium hydrogen phosphate and the whole is heated under pressure while shaking. The polymerizate is coagulated by salting out, and the precipitate washed with alkali and then with water. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, the polymerization may be effected in mass without the addition of a diluent, or in an organic solvent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
