Abstract

The polymerization of diolefines or homologues or analogues thereof by alkali or alkaline earth metals is effected in presence of saturated or unsaturated organic halogen compounds such as ethylene chloride or bromide, 1-2-propylene chloride, vinyl chloride or bromide, cis or trans dichlorethylene and the like, preferably those which are liquid or soluble in the diolefine or in the diluent. The process may be effected in presence of solvents or diluents and/or cyclic diethers, unsaturated ethers or acetals as described in Specifications 334,184, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], 340,474, and 340,008. In the examples butadiene is polymerized with sodium and ethylene chloride, vinyl chloride, benzyl chloride and dioxane, 1-2-dibromcyclohexane, 3-chlor-2-quinaldine, a -chlornaphthalene, a -bromnaphthalene, and chlor-hydroxy-hydroindene respectively.
