Abstract

Ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons are polymerized by contact with a catalyst prepared by mixing (A) the reaction product of at least one TiX4 and at least one VX4 with at least one AlR3, with (B) at least one AlR3 and/or AlR2X (R = alkyl, X = halogen). In Examples, propylene and butadiene are polymerized, and ethylenepropylene and butadiene-isoprene copolymerized, using as catalyst TiCl4/VCl4/AlEt3 reaction product plus AlEt3; butadiene is also polymerized using as catalyst TiCl4/VCl4/AlEt3 reaction product plus AlEt2Cl, or alternatively TiBr4/VCl4/AlEt3 reaction product plus AlEt3.
