Abstract
Copolymers of ethylene and vinyl acetate are made by conjoint polymerization in the presence of a catalyst comprising (1) at least one compound of iron, silver, manganese or a transition element of Group IVa, Va and VIa of the Periodic Table having at least one substituent in the form of halogen, oxygen or an O-hydrocarbon radical attached to said element; and (2) a reducing component which is a metal hydride or an organometallic compound. The catalyst system may be admixed prior to use or in the presence of the monomers. The polymerization may be carried out in bulk or in the presence of an inert hydrocarbon solvent such as cyclohexane, benzene or n-heptane. The component (1) may be titanium tetrachloride, vanadyl tri-chloride, molybdenum pentachloride, vanadium tetrachloride. The reducing component (2) may be a lithium aluminium tetra-alkyl, lithium alkyl, aluminium tri-alkyl, e.g. aluminium tri-isobutyl, or a Grignard reagent. The reaction may be stopped by adding isopropyl alcohol to destroy the catalyst and the product may be subjected to solvent fractionation, e.g. with acetone-toluene. Upon complete or partial hydrolysis the corresponding ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymers are formed. The copolymers are useful for moulding or the formation of films, fibres which may be colddrawn and filaments and for use in paints and other types of finishes.
