Abstract
Ethylene is polymerized at a pressure below 100 kg. per sq. cm and at a temperature below 100 DEG C. in the presence of a liquid hydrocarbon reaction medium and a catalyst comprising an organometallic compound and a compound of a metal of Group IV(a), V(a) or VI(a) in which the mol. ratio of the catalyst components is at least 1,5 mols of the organometallic compound per mol. of sub-group (a) metal compound, the catalyst having been prepared by mixing its components together at room temperature for 1 to 5 hours or for 30 to 60 minutes at a temperature of from 30 DEG to 70 DEG C., before being passed to the polymerization zone, and oxygen is introduced into the polymerization zone in an amount of not more than 90 litres per kilogram of catalyst. The oxygen is preferably used in an amount greater than 20 litres per kilogram of catalyst. Specified catalyst components are diethyl aluminium monochloride and titanium tetrachloride. The polymerization is preferably carried out continuously and the oxygen introduced uniformly e.g. as air. The molecular weight of the polymer may be varied from 50,000 to 750,000 according to the quantity of oxygen present. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 824,198, 828,692 and 830,831.
