Abstract
Polymers of olefins containing from 2 to 8 carbon atoms are made by polymerizing one or more olefins in the presence of a catalyst comprising a solid halide of a metal selected from Group IV(a), V(a), or VI(a) of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table and a mixture of aluminium triethyl and aluminium diethyl chloride in which the mole ratio of diethyl aluminium chloride to aluminium triethyl is from 37 to 57%. The polymerization is preferably effected in an inert liquid reaction medium, e.g. n-heptane or isooctane. The olefins may be ethylene or propylene or mixtures thereof. The metal halide is preferable the trichloride or dichloride of titanium or zirconium. The polymer is purified by conventional techniques and the purified polymer may be separated into an amorphous and a crystalline fraction by treatment with hot n-heptane.
