Polymers of one or more alpha-olefins having 2 to 6 carbon atoms are made by polymerizing the alpha-olefin in the presence of a catalyst consisting of the reaction product of an organometallic compound of Groups I to III of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table and a mixture of at least two compounds of the IVth to VIIIth groups, wherein the mixture contains a vanadium compound together with an orthotitanium or orthozirconium tetra-ester, or a mixture of an orthotitanium and orthozirconium tetraester, or a mixture of halogen containing esters of tetravalent titanium and zirconium, and after formation the catalyst is heated to a temperature of from 30‹ to 300‹ C. If desired, the catalyst may be filtered, purified, and a compound of Groups I to III added prior to use as a catalyst. If desired, the compounds of Groups IV to VIII may be heated to 30‹ to 300‹ C. Exemplified catalysts are titanium tetra-npropylester, and vanadium oxychloride optionally refluxed at 100-120‹ C. for 2 hours, plus diethylaluminium chloride, or di-isobutyl aluminium fluoride. The polymerization may be carried out in a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon diluent, and hydrogen may be present. Exemplified monomers are ethylene, propylene, a mixture of ethylene and propylene, and 4-methyl-1-pentane.
