Abstract
Catalyst complexes for the polymerization of ethylene (see Group IV (a)) are obtained by reducing a titanium compound, in hydrocarbon solution, with an organometallic or metal hydride reducing agent in the ratio of 0.4 to 1.4, the titanium in the complex being reduced to a valency below 3. The titanium compound may be the tetrachloride or trichloride or tetrapropyl titanate, and the reducing agents specified are lithium aluminium tetra-alkyls, Grignard reagents and metal alkyls, e.g. lithium aluminium tetradecyl and hydride, phenyl magnesium bromide, lithium butyl, tin tetrabutyl and sodium borohydride. The hydrocarbon solvent may be cyclohexane, benzene, hexane, butane, pentane or heptane. The catalyst complex may be formed prior to or during the polymerization.ALSO:A process for the production of solid polyethylene of melt index 0.005 to 3 comprises continuously adding ethylene to a liquid hydrocarbon solvent at 150 DEG to 230 DEG C. and under pressure, in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained by reducing a hydrocarbon solution of a titanium compound with an organometallic or metal hydride reducing agent in the ratio of 0.4 to 1.4, whereby the valency of the titanium in the complex is reduced to below 3, the dissolved polymer being continuously separated, e.g. by precipitation, and removed. The titanium compound may be the tetrachloride or trichloride or tetrapropyl titanate. Reducing agents specified are lithium aluminium tetraalkyls, Grignard reagents and metal alkyls, e.g. lithium aluminium tetradecyl, lithium aluminium hydride, phenyl magnesium bromide, lithium butyl, tin tetrabutyl and sodium borohydride. The hydrocarbon solvent may be cyclohexane, benzene, hexane, butane, pentane or heptane. Other ethylenic monomers such as propylene and butadiene may also be included. The catalyst complex may be formed prior to or during the polymerization and the actual melt index may be controlled by the ratio of the catalyst components or by the temperature used. The presence of hydrogen and oxygen in small quantities may also be used to control the melt index. In the example the ethylene and solvent are purified before use. The products are linear and contain titanium, and find application as pipes, wire-insulation, filaments and paper coatings.
