Abstract

An ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbon, particularly propylene but also, e.g. ethylene, the butylenes, butadiene and styrene, is polymerized (or copolymerized) with the use of a catalyst prepared by mixing (1) an aluminium dialkyl halide with (2) the product obtained by reacting at above 130 DEG C. an aluminium trialkyl with a titanium tetrahalide in a molar ratio of 0.6 : 1-0.2 : 1. Optionally, product (2) is mixed with further aluminium trialkyl before mixing with (1). Et2AlCl, TiCl4 and AlEt3 are specified as catalyst components. Decane and iso-octane are specified diluents. The polymerization process may be batch or continuous, and the polymer may be isolated by means of ethanol and purified by washing with 0.2% HCl and water. Specifications 789,781 and 823,021 are referred to.ALSO:A polymerization catalyst is prepared by mixing (1) an aluminium dialkyl halide (e.g. Et2AlCl) with (2) the product obtained by reacting at above 130 DEG C. an aluminium trialkyl (e.g. Et3Al) with a titanium tetrahalide (e.g. TiCl4) in a molar ratio of 0.6:1-0.2:1. Optionally, product (2) is mixed with further aluminium trialkyl before mixing with (1); decane and iso-octane are specified diluents. Specifications 789,781 and 823,021 are referred to.
