Abstract
In the preparation of Ziegler-type catalysts the complex formed by reducing the Group IV to VI compound with an organo-metallic compound or a derivative thereof is separated and mixed with a further amount of the second compound. For example, titanium tetrachloride is mixed with aluminium diethyl chloride, and the resulting brown precipitate is suspended in iso-octane and a further quantity of aluminium diethyl chloride added, which may be the supernatant liquor from the first reaction still containing the aluminium compound, to form the final catalyst. It is stated that the yield of polymer is a function of the amount of the first precipitated compound used, while the amount of the metallo-organic compound controls molecular weight of the product. Polymerisation may first proceed with the original precipitate as catalyst, and the organo-metallic compound which may be the same or different from that used in the first stage, added at a later stage or stages to reactivate the catalyst. The process is applied to olefines especially mono-olefines to give solid polymers and co-polymers using the catalyst components described in Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 829,627 and 829,628.ALSO:In the preparation of catalysts of the Ziegler type for low-pressure polymerization of olefines, the complex formed by reducing the Group IV to Group VI compound with an organo-metallic compound or a derivative thereof is separated and mixed with a further amount of the organo-metallic compound. For example, titanium tetrachloride is mixed with aluminium di-ethyl chloride, and the resulting brown precipitate is suspended in iso-octane and a further quantity of aluminium di-ethyl chloride added, which may be the supernatant liquor from the first reaction still containing the aluminium compound, to form the final catalyst. It is stated that the yield of polymer is a function of the amount of the first complex used, while the amount of the organo-metallic compound controls the molecular weight of the product. Polymerization may first proceed with the original precipitated complex as catalyst, and the organo-metallic compound, which may be the same or different from that used in the first stage, added at a later stage or stages to reactivate the catalyst. The process is applied to olefines especially mono-olefines, e.g. ethylene, to give solid polymers and co-polymers using the catalyst components described in Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 829,627 and 829,628.
