Abstract
Olefin polymers having a broad molecular weight distribution are made by polymerizing ethylene with if desired up to 5% by weight of butene-1 or propylene, in an inert solvent or dispersing agent, in the presence of hydrogen, and a catalyst comprising diethyl aluminium monochloride and (a) one part of the solid reaction product of TiCl 4 with one or more alkyl aluminium compounds containing chlorine, and (b) 0À1 to 0À4 part of the solid reaction product of Ti(OR) 4-n Cl n (in which n = 1 to 3, and R represents an isopropyl or isobutyl radical) with diethylaluminium monochloride and/or ethyl aluminium sesquichloride. Component (b) may be formed in situ in the presence of component (a) and similarly (a) may be formed in presence of (b). The polymerization is preferably effected in a diesel oil fraction, and the catalyst decomposed with n-butanol. The molecular weight distribution corresponds to the degree of molecular inhomogeneity (U-value).
