941,372. Polymerizing olefins. FARBWERKE HOECHST A.G. Feb. 26, 1960 [Feb. 27, 1959], No. 6897/60. Heading C3P. Ethylene polymers are made by polymerizing ethylene in the presence of a liquid hydrocarbon dispersing medium boiling in the range of 60 to 250‹C., hydrogen, and a TiCl 3 - containing- catalyst obtained by reacting TiCl 4 and an organo-metallic aluminium compound, by employing 3 to 20 millimols of the washed catalyst reaction product per litre of dispersing medium, and from 0À5 to 15 millimols of TiCl 4 per litre of dispersing medium, and activating the polymerization reaction by adding a dialkyl aluminium monohalide or an alkyl aluminium sesquihalide. The ethylene may contain minor amounts of higher olefins such as propylene and butylene. The hydrogen may be introduced with the ethylene. The process may be effected continuously.
