Abstract
In the polymerization of a -olefins in hydrocarbon solvents to obtain prevailingly isotactic polymers using catalysts produced by contacting organometallic compounds with transition metal compounds of Group IVa, Va or VIa metals in a valency state lower than the maximum, the molecular weight of the polymer is reduced by the introduction into the reaction system of one or more hydrogen halides such as hydrogen chloride, e.g. in 0,5 to 100 mols. per 100 of organometallic compound. A complex with the catalyst is said to be formed. In the example propylene is polymerized in heptane using TiCl3+AlEt3+HCl with purification and extraction of product being effected with heptane, water, conc. HCl, ether and heptane.
