Abstract
Olefin polymers with a broad molecular weight distribution (C D ) and a low melt index (M.I.) are obtained by polymerization in the presence of an organometallic compound-transition metal compound catalyst on an inert support, in which process C D is controlled by varying the hydrogen concentration from 20 to 50 gms. per kg. of olefin and the desired low M.I. is obtained by carrying out the polymerization at 40 to 65 C. and/or by using an agent for increasing molecular weight, e.g. an alcohol, ether or acid. In examples and comparative examples, ethylene is homo- or co-polymerized with butene-1 in the presence of (C 2 H 5 ) 3 Al or (i-C 4 H 9 ) 3 Al/TiCl 4 -MgO or hydromagnesite/H 2 , and optionally octanol.
