1384529 Olefin polymerization catalysts IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 June 1972 [12 July 1971 6 Jan 1972 (2)] 32536/71 616/72 and 617/72 Heading C3P An olefin polymerization catalyst comprises (a) a product obtained by treating with a primary or secondary acyclic, monoalkanol containing at least 4 carbon atoms, a solid product containing titanium or vanadium trihalide or mixture thereof and obtained by reacting a titanium or vanadium tetrahalide or mixture thereof and an organo-compound of aluminium wherein the alkanol is used in an amount of 20 to 100% molar based on the titanium or vanadium trihalide or mixture thereof and (b) the same or a different organocompound of a non-transition metal of Groups I to III of the MendelÚef Periodic Table, and optionally (c) at least one electron donor compound (e.g. an amine, a cyclic nitrogen compound, an organic oxygen containing compound, an organo-phosphorus compound or an organometallic compound), capable of reducing the proportion of polymer soluble in the polymerization diluent. When the monomer is propylene the alkanol in (a) preferably contains 4 to 9 carbon atoms and when the monomer is ethylene the alkanol in (a) preferably contains at least 10 carbon atoms. Ethylene is preferably polymerized in the presence of an allylic compound, e.g. cyclohexene, methyl cyclohexene, 1,4-cyclohexadiene, tetralin or α-pinene. In the examples propylene is polymerized in a hydrocarbon diluent using as (a) T 1 Cl 4 reacted with ethyl aluminium sesquichloride, n-propyl aluminium sesquichloride or diethyl aluminium chloride and the product treated with n-octanol, n-butanol, n-pentanol, n-hexanol, 2-ethyl hexanol, 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanol, n-decanol, or n-do-, tetra-, hexa- or octadecanol and as (b) triethylaluminium with and without as (c) isoquinoline, tetramethylethylene-diamine or hexamethylphosphoric triamide, and ethylene is polymerized with hydrogen under high pressure using (a) the reaction product of T 1 Cl 4 and ethyl aluminium sesquichloride treated with n-octadecanol and (b) aluminium diethyl chloride or triisobutyl aluminium with cyclohexene also present.
